How a locksmith assesses your home's burglary risk

By Valley Village Locksmith Store team · Updated

Location, routine, doors and locks: the four things a locksmith looks at, and what you can do about each.

Home security checklist on a clipboard

A local locksmith sees a lot of doors, including ones that have been forced. That experience makes them well placed to look at your home and tell you where it's vulnerable. Here's what a security assessment usually covers.

When to have your home assessed

  • After moving into a new home
  • After a break-in nearby, or at your own property
  • Before a long trip
  • When you're renovating or replacing doors

1. Location and layout

Is the house on a corner, beside an alley or set back behind tall hedges? Doors hidden from the street, side gates and attached garages are common entry points. A locksmith will look at which doors and windows could be approached without being seen.

2. Household routine

Homes that are empty at predictable times are at higher risk. Lighting on timers, a doorbell camera and not advertising travel on social media all help.

3. Doors and frames

Most burglars come through a door. The locksmith checks the door material, hinges, the frame around the lock and the strike plate. A strong lock on a weak frame can still be kicked in. See entry door repair and replacement.

4. Existing locks and keys

Are there deadbolts on every exterior door? Are the cylinders a decent grade? Do you know who has keys? Upgrading to a quality deadbolt and rekeying are often the most cost-effective improvements.

5. Windows and sliding doors

Ground-floor windows and sliding patio doors need working locks. A secondary bar or pin lock on a slider is simple and effective.

After the assessment

You should come away with a short, prioritized list of fixes and a quote for any work you want done. There's no obligation to do everything at once.
