Locked out of your apartment? What to do next

By Valley Village Locksmith Store team · Updated

Building manager or locksmith first? What renters should do when locked out, and the rules on changing locks.

Apartment door and mailbox keys

Apartment lockouts come with an extra layer: there's often a landlord, building manager or HOA involved. Here's how to handle one, and what to know about changing locks in a rental.

Step 1: Check the easy options

  • Does a roommate, partner or trusted neighbor have a spare?
  • Is there an on-site manager or a management company out-of-hours line?
  • Check your lease: some buildings provide lockout help, sometimes for a fee.

Step 2: Call a locksmith

If no one can let you in, call a locksmith. Tell them the address, unit number and how to get through any gate or lobby door. A technician will open the door using non-destructive methods wherever possible. Expect to show ID that links you to the unit, such as a driver's license with the address or a copy of the lease.

Step 3: If a key was lost or stolen

Tell your landlord or manager. A lost key with your address could let someone in, so ask for the lock to be rekeyed. Many landlords will arrange this; some allow tenants to arrange it at their own cost if the landlord receives a new key.

Can I change the locks in a rental?

Generally, not without your landlord's permission; check your lease. California has specific rules in some situations, such as protections allowing survivors of domestic violence to request a lock change. If you're unsure, ask your landlord or a tenants' rights organization before acting. We're happy to work with your landlord's approval.

For landlords and managers

We rekey units between tenants, replace mailbox locks and set up master key systems so managers keep access to every unit. See eviction lock changes and residential services.

Avoiding the next lockout

Leave a spare with someone nearby, or ask about a keypad lock (with landlord approval). Keep a locksmith's number saved: 818-942-3093.

We cover apartment buildings throughout Valley Village and North Hollywood.
